Who We Are
Since 1993, the St. Michael's Mental Health and Addiction Service supports some of the city’s most disadvantaged individuals with serious mental illness, addictions and complex medical needs living in poverty and facing multiple hurdles in achieving recovery and community integration (i.e. homelessness, lack of social supports, criminalization). In partnership with community organizations in the Mid-East Health Link and beyond, the Mental Health and Addictions Service currently offers programming that promotes recovery through timely access to high quality, evidence informed comprehensive health and social supports.
Nested in an academic urban hospital, the mission of the Mental Health and Addictions Service is to provide:
- state-of-the-art clinical mental health services to individuals living in Southeast Toronto and beyond;
- Exemplary education experiences for students of all professional disciplines, for practitioners in community and hospital settings and for interested community members; and.
- To conduct and promote policy and practice relevant research
The Mental Health and Addictions Service contributes to the academic goals of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and supports training of students from various disciplines such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, rehabilitative sciences, and social work.
What do we provide
The St. Michael’s Mental Health and Addictions service is the largest provider of mental health and addiction services in Mid East Health Link. Home to an inter-professional team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, nurse practitioners, discharge planners, peer support workers, vocational counselor, addiction counselors, social recreation therapist, and a psychologist. The Mental Health and Addictions Service is the Centre of excellence in general psychiatry at the University of Toronto and train a large number of medical students and residents in psychiatry each year.
Community accountability and the fostering of linkages with other providers are supported through a Community Advisory Panel composed of a mix of consumers, agency representatives and service staff. The Mental Health Community Advisory Panel acts as an advisory committee to St. Michael’s Mental Health and Addiction Service for the purpose of promoting, advocating and working to ensure an accessible, compassionate, effective, progressive, patient centred health care continuum for those with mental health and/or addictions issues.
