Test catalogue

Renin Activity (Aldosterone:Renin Activity Ratio).

Test Name

Renin activity (Aldosterone:Renin Activity Ratio).

Gold Tube Lavender Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Lavender (EDTA) for Renin (Gel-separator tubes are not acceptable)

Container Type = 1 Gold Top (SST) for Aldosterone

Minimum Volume = 2mL plasma

Tubes must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect 1 lavender (EDTA) and 1 gold top tubes . Avoid refrigeration to eliminate cryoactivation of prorenin to renin.

Results may be affected if the patient is on any of the following anti-hypertensive medications. Medications should be held for 7 days prior to testing or for as long as is clinically feasible.
• Increased ARR if the patient is on clonidine or beta blockers.
• Decreased ARR if the patient is on spironolactone, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, or doxazosin.

Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Separate 2 aliquots (1 plasma and 1 serum) and freeze immediately. Must arrive at SMH core lab frozen. Avoid refrigeration to eliminate cryoactivation of prorenin to renin. Store sample in assigned rack -30 freezer by the seperation bench.

Add-on stability: Cannot add on to a previous sample draw.

Rejection Criteria: Heparinized plasma and thawed samples.

Stability: Sample stable refrigerated for 4 hours and frozen for 30 days.

Transportation: Transport on ice to core lab as soon as possible.
