Specimen HandlingCollection Instructions: Whole blood samples collected in heparinized syringes or capillary tubes. Samples may be arterial, venous or capillary. • Plastic syringe samples: Analyze as quickly as possible preferably within 30 minutes of collection at room temperature • Capillary samples: Analyzed within 5 minutes at room temperature whenever possible • Lactate, carboxyhemoglobin, and methemoglobin samples collected in heparin (green top) vacutainer analyzed within 30 minutes. • Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition. Laboratory Staff Instructions: Plastic syringe samples: Analyze as quickly as possible preferably within 30 minutes of collection at room temperature. Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis, Unlabeled or Not Sufficient Quantity Samples will be rejected. Stability: Stable at 2 – 8°C for 1 week. Transportation: Send sample on ice to core lab as soon as possible. |
