Advocacy and social policy
The St. Michael’s Academic Family Health Team's Advocacy Committee has developed an advocacy toolkit and departmental framework to support advocacy by members of the department.
The SMHAFHT has a department-wide advocacy campaign, initiated in 2019, called "Healing our roots: A health equity approach to reconciliation"
Many staff and physicians are already working to shape policy on social determinants of health through community-based advocacy and participation in government consultations at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.
- Dr. Curtis Handford was appointed the Primary Care Lead for the Toronto Central LHIN Mid-East Sub-Region.
- Dr. Gary Bloch was appointed to a provincial government working group that produced "Income security: A roadmap for change".
- Dr. Andrew Pinto was one of the founding members of the Decent Work and Health Network through a collaboration between two community-based organizations, Health Providers Against Poverty and the Worker’s Action Centre, and with support from the Atkinson Foundation.
- Dr. Laurie Green is a member of the Inner City Advisory Committee and also Equity Framework Task Force of the Toronto District School Board.
