Research studies

St. Michael’s Hospital is one of many sites involved in large-scale clinical trials. The goal of these trials is to influence the treatment of diabetes.

If the researchers feel you meet the study criteria, you may be asked to participate in one of these clinical trials. You will be provided with more information about the trial to help you decide whether or not you would like to be involved.

Your participation in these trials is voluntary.

Research studies currently being conducted at St. Michael’s Hospital




This study is looking at the cardiovascular effects of Finerenone (a drug that is being tested for treatment in diabetic kidney disease)

Study entry criteria

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Albumin to Creatinine Rraio (ACR) 3.4 to 33.8 and eGFR 26 to 60 plus cardiovascular disease OR
  • ACR 33.9 or greater and eGFR 60 or greater
Age criteria 18 years of age or older
Length of the study 3 to 4 years

Exclusion criteria

  • Cannot be taking one of the following medications
    • Spironolactone
    • ACE inhibitor and ARB
    • Renin inhibitor, K sparing diuretic
