St. Michael’s Hospital has named Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi the new Fondation Baxter & Alma Ricard Chair in Inner City Health. This endowed research chair allows an international leader to focus on teaching and evidence-based research that addresses some of the more difficult issues in providing health services to the disadvantaged.

Dr. Bayoumi is an internal medicine specialist and HIV physician at St. Michael’s and a scientist with the hospital’s Centre for Research on Inner City Health in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute.

“Ahmed’s research evaluates how the health care system can effectively and efficiently deliver care to those who need it most while also addressing issues of equity and social justice,” said Dr. Stephen Hwang, director of the Centre for Research on Inner City Health. “He is particularly interested in improving health care and quality of life for people who use drugs and people living with HIV.”

The Sisters of St. Joseph established St. Michael’s in 1982 to care for the sick and poor. The inner city health chair reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to its 123-year-old mission of serving the disadvantaged. The chair is also a testament to St. Michael’s excellence in academic health care.

“When St. Michael’s was founded, inner city health problems were diphtheria, typhoid and cholera,” said Dr. Bayoumi. “Those issues have given way to modern concerns such as homelessness, violence, addiction, and HIV. I’m honoured to continue the tradition of former chairs Drs. Don Wasylenki and Patricia O'Campo by working to find solutions that will improve the lives of those most in need.”

The Fondation Baxter & Alma Ricard Chair in Inner City Health was established in 1996 by one-million-dollar donations from both Alma Ricard and the F.K. Morrow Foundation. The chair is a joint partnership between St. Michael’s and the University of Toronto, where Dr. Bayoumi is a full professor with its Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and its Department of Medicine.
