2016-17 Annual Report

April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017

We all know change is a constant. So rather than standing still, waiting for change to come, St. Michael’s Hospital creates its own and determines our own destiny. We’ve been forging a bold and purposeful path so that we can continue to provide exceptional and compassionate patient care for all, the principle upon which we were founded.

Physically, our space has changed since we embarked on our ambitious St. Michael’s 3.0 project. We’ve permanently closed the Victoria Street entrance to continue our work renovating and expanding our Emergency Department. Our new Condrain Group Multiple Sclerosis Clinic and Clinical Neurophysiology have moved into their new spaces on 9 Donnelly South. We also began demolition of the Cardinal Carter South stairwell to complete construction on the tower and link it to the existing hospital. Most excitingly, the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower reached its full height of 17 storeys and was topped off this past year.

We are transforming within the health-care system as well. At the beginning of the year, we announced our intention to integrate with St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare. Being part of a health network will benefit our respective communities and the health system as a whole, and most importantly, enable us to provide better and greater care for our patients when and where they need it most. We are hoping for our first official day as an integrated health network to be August 1, 2017, pending approval from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

What remains constant is our unwavering dedication to providing safe and excellent care for all our patients. We maintained our exemplary standing from Accreditation Canada for safe care and quality in our 2016 survey. It is the highest designation an organization can receive from Accreditation Canada. Our next survey will be May 2020.

We are embracing this time of transformation as an opportunity for reinvestment in patient care and renewal in our commitment to carrying out our mission of providing compassionate, world-class care for those most in need. As always, we are grateful we can continue to count on your support, whether you are a staff member, physician, volunteer, student, donor or a supporter in some other way. Thank you.
