YSTOP (Youth Science and Technology Outreach Program)

What Is YSTOP?

This new program, developed by St. Michael's Hospital and funded in part by the Ministry of Research and Innovation, will involve students in activities designed to give hands-on science, technology and research experience.

The co-op placements provide students with work experience across various areas in the Hospital. Students will assist the Hospital by greeting and registering patients, preparing charts, delivering labs, preparing exam rooms, escorting patients and completing clerical support duties.

In addition, YSTOP co-op students participate in a full calendar of educational modules, including:

  1. Observing state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging procedures and discovering how the technology has developed over time.
  2. Visiting the diagnostic labs and learning about the tests physicians use to diagnose diseases and conditions.
  3. Touring the research vivarium to explore the role of animals in medical research and the patient simulation centre to see what is involved in emergency and trauma care.
  4. Attending regular scientific presentations and "Lunch and Learn" sessions with Hospital researchers.

In order to participate, youth must be at least 16 years of age, in grade 11 – 12, and enrolled in the co-op education program at their commercial, alternative, technical or academic high school.

Deadlines for completed application packages
  • Semester I program: mid-September
  • Semester II program: mid-January

It is strongly encouraged that participants apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and interviews may begin earlier than the deadlines.

  4. Two references and a resume.

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted to arrange the time and date of their on-site interview at the Hospital.
