Keenan Research Centre - Students & Trainees

Research Training Centre - How to Apply

The application process depends on the type of trainee you wish to be.

  • Graduate Students
  • Postdoctoral and Research Fellows
  • Co-op Students

Graduate Students

To be a graduate student, you must be enrolled in a Master's or a PhD program of a graduate school, and should have a supervisor who is affiliated with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's and a graduate school (e.g. Institute of Medical Science, School of Graduate Studies, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP), Health Policy Management and Evaluation (HPME), etc.).

Apply to be a graduate student trainee
  1. Choose a potential research supervisor (refer to Scientist Profiles or Research Programs).
  2. Contact the selected research supervisor and discuss the opportunities.
  3. If you and your supervisor agree to work together, your supervisor will contact the Office of Research Administration to initiate the application process.
  4. Your graduate school will advise you on the process and forms they require.
    • Alternatively, you may contact your supervisor first, and submit your application to a graduate school after this, specifically asking for the training place and the supervisor. The advantage of this sequence is that you clearly manifest your interest and may ensure early placing at the desired lab/office.
  5. Do not forget that acceptance to the graduate program is mandatory in order for you to become a trainee. Please carefully check the requirements of your graduate program.
  6. If you are not a Canadian citizen, it is especially useful and important to review information for international trainees.
