Research Activities
Dr. Teodor Grantcharov completed General Surgery residency at the University of Copenhagen, and a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. He then completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Temple University School of Medicine in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Grantcharov is a staff surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital and an associate professor at the University of Toronto. His clinical interest is the area of minimally invasive surgery, with a focus on foregut disease including cancer and revisional bariatric surgery.
Dr. Grantcharov’s area of academic interest is in the field of minimally invasive surgery and surgical simulation. He has become internationally recognized as a leader in this area with a focus on virtual reality computer simulation as a tool for training and evaluation of laparoscopic surgical skills.

Dr. Grantcharov has more than 85 peer-reviewed publications and more than 100 invited presentations in Europe, South and North America. He sits on numerous committees with the Society of the American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, The European Association of Endoscopic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. He is Associated Editor of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, Surgical Endoscopy and British Journal of Surgery.
Educational Activities
Dr. Grantcharov is a full member of the Institute of Medical Science and is cross appointed at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He has successfully supervised a number of MSc and PhD students and has developed and internationally recognized program in surgical education and innovation.
