Director, Peter and Louise Walter Retinal Regeneration Laboratory, Vascular Biology, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute

Clinician-Scientist, Ophthalmology, St. Michael's Hospital

Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto

Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Biomedical Engineering, McMaster University

Founding Director, Visual Electrophysiology Unit, Ophthalmology, St. Michael's Hospital

Clinical Specialty

Ophthalmology: diseases of the retina (especially diabetes)

Research Interests

Diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal repair and regeneration, neurovascular protection, age-related macular degeneration

Research Activities

My lab's research focuses on the cellular and molecular interactions between nerves and blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive film of the eye), focusing especially on the effects of low oxygen. We study these effects in diabetes, retinal detachment, retinal degeneration and repair. In addition to cell culture and molecular biology, we use specialized imaging and electrophysiological tests to determine the effects of neuroprotective and vasculoprotective molecules on both cell types. We also strive to ensure that our basic sciences studies parallel those in the clinic, and have six trials currently underway.

Other Activities

  1. Banting and Best Diabetes Centres Research Committee, 2007-present
  2. Co-Author, Canadian Diabetes Association, Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2008
  3. Moderator, Mechanisms of Diabetic Retinopathy, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Florida, April 2008
  4. Course Coordinator for an International Symposium, "NeuroVascular Protection in Diabetes: the Eye as Window," April 2009

Educational Activities

I am involved in residency training through the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences of the University of Toronto (UofT), and have summer students and co-op students through St Michael's Hospital, the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre (UofT), and the UofT Scarborough Campus. I currently have no positions available, but will be recruiting in 2009.
