Keenan Research Centre
KRC of the LKSKI - Summer Student Program 2012
The Keenan Research Centre (KRC) in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute (LKSKI) Summer Student Program provides opportunities for university students to conduct research in a laboratory and/or clinical setting at St. Michael's under the supervision of a Research Scientist (Principal Investigator).
The KRC Summer Student Program consists of:
- Students hired as employees of the hospital and paid a minimum hourly wage of $10.25.
- Students registered as Non-Paid Students (volunteers) who wish to gain experience in a research setting.
How do students apply to the program?
The KRC Summer Student Program does not have an application form for students to apply to the program. Students must first align themselves with a St. Michael's Principal Investigator (PI) and it is up to the student to find a PI who is doing work that they are interested in; then contact the Investigator’s office and set up an appointment to speak to them personally and “sell” themselves. Find a Principal Investigator at St. Michael’s.
All St. Michael's Principal Investigators are affiliated with the University of Toronto and students can go through the departments at the university to get a listing of researchers. They must work at St. Michael's.
Who is Eligible?
- Student must be in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of an Undergraduate degree program at time of application
- Students in medical school
Who is Not Eligible?
- High school students
- Graduate students enrolled in an M.Sc. or Ph.D. program
Students must be enrolled full time in medical school or in an undergraduate university program at the time of submitting their paperwork (resume + transcript + references) to the Investigator.
Students must agree to participate in the project on a full-time basis, and not terminate their engagement prior to the stipulated end date, unless for unforeseen circumstances. Summer students usually work 35 hours per week. Student placements run from May/June to end of August.
The summer student’s project must take place at St. Michael's, unless the Principal Investigator's laboratory is located off-site.
Resume distribution by Office of Research Administration (ORA)
- Generally, we do not assist students in finding Principal Investigators (PI) to work with at St. Michael's .
- Our assistance in securing a PI should be used as a last resort.
- PI's prefer to have students contact their office to set up a time to discuss the summer studentship personally.
Need Assistance?
If the student has not been successful in securing a PI, the student can send a cover letter, resume and a copy of their most current transcript electronically (Word document only) to Cordelia Cooper at cooperc@smh.ca who will distribute to the PIs. When doing this, please provide some key words in your email that we could include in the subject line, which would assist the PI in their review.
Human Resources/Payroll
Once the PI decides to hire a summer student, the next step is for the PI to request the Hiring Payroll Package from the ORA. The payroll packages will be available and distributed early May, 2012.
All students must be registered with Human Resources at St. Michael's, and this is administratively completed by the Office of Research Administration. Once the PI and student complete the payroll package, the student is then directed to bring the payroll package to Cordelia Cooper, Research Employment Coordinator, who will register them, set them up with SMH ID Badges and forward the payroll package to the HR Department.
Who needs to complete the Summer student payroll package?
Every summer student (paid and non-paid), must be registered through the Office of Research Administration.
