St. Michaels Foundation Quality Innovation Fund

With the generous support of the St. Michael’s Board of Directors and an anonymous donor, St. Michael’s has established a “Quality Innovation Fund.” Through targeted investments and a series of open competitions, the fund will support resources and strategies to build quality improvement capacity among our physicians, nurses, health disciplines and all other hospital staff.

The fund has three main objectives. These are:

  • To enable innovation in interprofessional quality improvement across the full spectrum of clinical work at St. Michael’s.
  • To develop and deliver education and training to front-line clinical leaders in the science of quality improvement, knowledge translation and change management.
  • To develop St. Michael’s local, national, and international reputation for quality improvement, and our capacity to deliver excellence in all six dimensions of patient care (safety, outcomes, access, patient experience, equity and efficiency).

One of the initiatives the fund will support is a Quality Improvement Fellowship Certificate Program. Established in partnership with the University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety, the program is designed for front-line clinical staff, non-clinical team leaders and new physicians. The 16-week program’s innovative curriculum includes didactic learning modules, team projects, parallel coaching/advisory sessions and lunch-and-learns with experts and leaders. Our first wave is focusing on improving patient access and flow. This program is unique in Canada.
