Inpatient Obstetrics & Gynecology

The department of obstetrics and gynecology is a core program within the inner city health program. We are supportive of a patient-centered approach to care, and our multidisciplinary team includes:

  • obstetricians
  • perinatologists
  • family practice physicians
  • registered midwives
  • pediatricians and nurse practitioners
  • registered nurses
  • lactation consultants
  • social workers
  • allied health professionals

As the only obstetrical trauma unit in the Greater Toronto Area, we offer specialized care to serve women with high risk pregnancies and serve an inner city population with diverse needs (such as victims of addiction, abuse and homelessness).

The obstetrics and gynecology department is affiliated with University of Toronto and provides learning experiences for residents, interns, clinical clerks, family practice and students of nursing, midwifery and EMS.

The Women's Health Community Advisory Panel helps us meet the inner city health needs of various communities. Within our mandate for teaching, our team has many ongoing research activities and has received teaching and research awards from the faculty of medicine. We have expanded our clinical services to include a minimally invasive approach to surgery, and we offer the only two-year fellowship in minimally invasive gynecological surgery in Canada.

The department has a strong multidisciplinary continuous quality improvement program. We were the first teaching hospital to participate in the Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently pilot project.
