St. Michael’s ophthalmologist develops international guidelines for glaucoma eye care

“Glaucoma affects 70 million people and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, yet most countries have no guidelines for treating glaucoma,” said Dr. Neeru Gupta, a St. Michael’s Hospital ophthalmologist and a scientist with the hospital’s Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science.

Ninety per cent of tragic blindness from glaucoma can be prevented with adequate treatment.

Dr. Gupta assembled and led an international task force to develop the world's first International Guidelines for Glaucoma Eye Care. The guidelines, developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization, are uniquely relevant to resource rich and poor regions of the world.
