Services: Molecular Biology

The Molecular Biology Laboratory at St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Laboratory Medicine applies DNA and RNA detection techniques to the diagnosis, prognosis and targeted therapy of various diseases, including colon cancer, brain cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer.  Other molecular tests include: detection of polyoma viruses, HSV, molecular investigations of coagulopathies.

 

Instructions for the KRAS Mutation test
  1. Select a paraffin block containing tumour tissue.
  2. Complete the KRAS mutation requisition form.

    Fax the requisition form to:

  3. Mail the paraffin block with a copy of the pathology report, in a padded envelope to:

Notes
  1. The paraffin block will be returned to your department after 6 sections have been cut from it.
  2. The presence of normal tissue in the paraffin block is not a problem.  However, the amount of tumour tissue should not be less than approximately 20% of the total tissue.
  3. The cost of the KRAS mutation test will be covered by Amgen Canada if the patient is a candidate for treatment by Vectibix™ (panitumumab).
