Tests, Labs & Imaging
The division of clinical biochemistry provides extensive clinical laboratory services in the broad domain of clinical chemistry, endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical toxicology. It employs fully automated multi-channel analytical systems for serum, urine and other fluids, in addition to manual procedures. Chromatography and immunoassay techniques are used to monitor biological drug levels for compliance and control of clinical drug regimes for the renal transplant and other clinical programs. In toxicology, drug screens for the drugs of abuse are performed by immunoassay and a drug profiling chromatography system soon to be replaced by gas liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric identification.
The division provides clinical interpretation of laboratory results, gives advice on utilization of laboratory tests, and assists in investigations and monitoring strategies for individual patients. We maintain close contact with clinicians, healthcare personnel and other hospitals to ensure practice guidelines are implemented.
The laboratory is the Toronto reference centre for clinical toxicology through Hospitals In-Common Laboratory (HICL). It is affiliated with the J. Alick Little Lipid Research Laboratory providing automated lipid testing and also provides testing for clinical trials, research and private laboratories.
