Unfortunately, kidney stones can become a recurring problem. Stone prevention is an integral part of treatment, and the stone prevention clinic is an important aspect of the Kidney Stone Centre.
At the clinic, patients are evaluated by a team of nephrologists, urologists, nurses and dieticians. Evaluation includes a detailed history and physical examination combined with specific blood tests and a 24-hour collection of urine for specific urine tests. These results, combined with the results of the stone analysis, can assist physicians to come to a diagnosis. Many abnormalities which predispose patients to form kidney stones can be diagnosed and treated, and specific recommendations regarding lifestyle changes, diet and medications can be made to minimize the risk of further stone formation.
