Medications

In addition to changes in lifestyle and diet, medications can occasionally help prevent certain type of kidney stones. The following table lists some medications that can be used in specific circumstances:

Calcium oxalate stones
-Thiazide diuretics (hydrochlorthiazide)
-Sodium cellulose phosphate
-Orthophosphates

Uric acid stones
-Allopurinol
-Potassium citrate
-Sodium bicarbonate

Inflammatory bowel disease and stones
-Cholestyramine
-Calcium supplements
-Potassium citrate
-Magnesium supplements

Low citrate in the urine
-Potassium citrate

Cystine stones
-Sodium bicarbonate
-Potassium citrate
-D-penicillamine
-Alpha-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG)
-Captopril

Struvite stones
