CT (CAT) Scan
Your needs will be attended to by a variety of professionals in Medical Imaging department. Upon arrival, your requisition will be processed by the clerical staff who will inform the technologist of your arrival, and direct you to our waiting area. The CT Clinical Aide will escort you to the change areas and give you preparation instructions. Your CT scan will be completed by the technologist.
The technologists at St. Michael's Hospital are a team of specialized professionals. They complete your scan and interact with you during your visit to the department. Our knowledgeable technologists will answer any of your questions and also start your intravenous if necessary. The technologist will monitor the scan as it is completed and attend to your needs during the procedure.
CT technologists have completed several years of training in radiography, followed by training in CT Scanning. All of our technologists are members of the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario, and meet all college requirements to practice in their profession. Each technologist must pass a national qualifying examination before they are permitted to practice, and must actively participate in continuing education throughout their career to be a member of the college.
The radiologist will interpret the images after you leave the department and send a detailed report to your doctor. The radiologist is a physician who has completed specialized training in CT imaging in addition to training in radiology. The job of the radiologist is to interpret the images obtained by the technologist and report the findings to your doctor. The radiologist will also complete any CT guided procedures such as biopsies. Radiologists must be a member of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons.
