This is a venous procedure done to relieve hepatic congestion in patients with cirrhosis. An artificial passage is created from the hepatic venous system to the portal venous system. Ultrasound is used to visualize the blood vessels in the neck region and local anaesthetic is given to numb the area. The procedure can take several hours. No special preparation is required.
