Angiography > Exams & Procedures > Chest (Thoracentesis) Therapeutic Tap

This procedure is performed to remove excess fluid collection in the chest (pleural fluid). Ultrasound is used to best view the fluid collection in the chest. Local anaesthetic is given to numb the area and then a small, thin tube is placed to drain the fluid and once the fluid is gone, it is removed.

This procedure takes about 1/2 hour.

If you are on blood thinners, it is important to let us know so appropriate blood work can be performed.
