Diseases & Conditions: Coronary Artery Disease
In coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis occurs in the main blood
vessels to the heart, the coronary arteries. A buildup of cholesterol
plaque narrows the arteries, and less blood reaches the heart. This
is especially likely during moments of physical stress, leading to
angina. Narrowed arteries also have the potential to become plugged
with a blood clot. When the blood flow to the heart is blocked, a
heart attack occurs and the heart muscle can become damaged.
