Endocrinologist
An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in metabolic and hormonal diseases, such as diabetes. The endocrinologist will help you create your diabetes care plan.
Diabetes educators
Our educators can provide support and guidance in managing your diabetes. Some of the topics they can address include:
- How to test your blood sugar
- Understanding your medications
- How to recognize and treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Proper insulin injection technique
- Help you adjust your insulin doses
- Understanding how food affects your blood sugar levels
- Counting the amount of carbohydrate in your food
- Understanding the effect physical activity has on your on blood sugar levels
- What to do when you are sick
- Weight loss
Social worker
The social worker can help you with:
- Medication coverage (for example: Trillium Drug Program, Social Assistance, and Disability Programs)
- Financial concerns
- Applying for the Disability Tax Credit (for people with Type 1 Diabetes)
- Counseling for diabetes distress, depression, anxiety, coping with chronic illness, or other mental health and emotional concerns
Chiropodist
The services the chiropodist can provide include:
- Nail care for high risk patients with diabetes
- Callus and corn management
- Ulcer care
- Education about general foot care
To be seen by the chiropodist at St. Michael’s Hospital, you must be a patient of one of the endocrinologists in the Diabetes Clinic.
