Keeping Healthy Breasts

Image for the Breast CentreEach month, either just after your period or after menopause, examine your breasts by sight and touch by following the easy steps shown in the breast self-examination section. It only takes a couple of minutes and you only need to do it once a month!

A Word of Reassurance

Remember: you are not in a panic searching for cancer. You are getting to know the normal look and feel of your breasts so that, if changes develop, you can spot them early. Monitoring your own health status is not a sign of over-anxiety; it's just a smart thing to do.

Facts to Remember

  • Eighty percent of breasts lumps are not cancer.
  • Early detection is the most important factor in survival, and the cure rate for breast cancers detected before they can spread is about 90 per cent.
  • Early cancers are more likely to be good candidates for lumpectomy (surgery that removes only the cancer, not the whole breast).
