Visiting a Patient

Coming to St. Michael's

Admitting

All elective patients (excluding maternity patients) must register at patient registration (on the first floor of the Cardinal Carter wing) with your valid Ontario Health card and, if applicable, additional insurance coverage information. See frequently called numbers for more information.

Balloons

Latex balloons are not allowed as some people may suffer severe allergic reactions. Only mylar balloons are permitted in the Hospital. Mylar balloons can be purchased at our gift shop.

Cell Phones

Cell phone use is not permitted in patient care areas. Please turn off your phones as signals interfere with patient care equipment. However, cell phones are permitted in our lobbies, our coffee shops and the Marketeria.

Electrical Appliances

Please inform your health care provider if you have brought any electrical appliances with you to the Hospital (like portable walkmans, hairdryers and electric razors) to determine if the appliance can be safely used in your unit.

Fire Safety

During a fire alarm, do not move through the Hospital unless directed by Hospital or fire department staff. All fire doors will automatically close until an ALL CLEAR announcement is made. Fire exits are clearly marked throughout the Hospital.

Flowers

Flowers are not permitted in the intensive care and respirology units, or in any room where patients are allergic to flowers.

Hospital Charges

Payment of any additional costs can be made at our patient accounts cash office on the first floor of the Cardinal Carter wing from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. After 4 p.m. and on weekends, financial payments can be deposited in the "drop slot" located outside the cash office.

Identification Badges

When you are admitted to the Hospital, you will receive an ID bracelet that you must wear at all times. St. Michael's Hospital staff, doctors, residents, students and volunteers are clearly identified by their ID badges.

Infection Control

Visitors that have cold or flu symptoms should avoid coming to the Hospital. Good hand hygiene is the most important way to prevent the spread of germs. An alcohol-based hand disinfectant should be used on entering and exiting the Hospital. Wash your hands before and after eating, after using the toilet, after blowing your nose, before and after touching bandages and when your hands become soiled.

Medications

If you will be a patient, please bring any medications you are currently taking. After your nurse reviews your medications, please make arrangements to have them sent home. The Hospital will supply your medications while you are an inpatient. Any prescriptions that are needed when you are discharged can be filled at our on-site pharmacy.

Smoking

St. Michael's Hospital is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is prohibited everywhere in the Hospital and within nine metres of any entrance or exit. Failure to comply with the law could result in fines of up to $5,000 for the individual involved and $5,000 for the Hospital for failing to enforce it. The no smoking bylaw is strictly enforced and fines will be levied.

Valuables

Please do not bring valuables with you to the Hospital. St. Michael's Hospital is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property.
