Our nurses are a unique group of health care professionals. Working at one of the busiest and most community-minded hospitals in Toronto, the first hospital in Canada to have a dedicated Inner City Health program, our nurses are known throughout Toronto for their compassion and caring.
There are over 640,000 patient visits and 55,000 emergency department visits each year. Over 18 per cent of all emergency visits are from patients who are homeless or under-housed. Our nurses treat everyone equally, from the city's most privileged to its most vulnerable. Their expertise is vast and diverse, encompassing all areas of excellence: cardiovascular care, diabetes, neurosurgery, mobility, obstetrics, cancer care, emergency and critical care, mental illness and palliative care.
We are also the designated downtown Toronto trauma centre for adults. Our operating room nurses support innovative surgeries and respond with confidence and skill to the most tragic trauma cases seen in Ontario.
Education and a "culture of discovery" are also our cornerstones of nursing excellence. In 2005, the nursing leadership team launched the inaugural nursing strategic plan to meet the challenges of the future and to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care. To this end, our nurses are encouraged and supported in their professional development.
