St. Michael’s Hospital named an employer of choice in GTA

Findings show that early screening may help prevent homelessness

Toronto, October 21, 2008

St. Michael’s Hospital is among Toronto’s best employers, earning a spot in the coveted list of GTA’s Top 75 Employers for 2009 — a showcase of the community’s leading organizations.

"At St. Michael's Hospital, employees have always been at the heart of everything we do," Hospital president and CEO Jeff Lozon said. "We understand the importance of investing in our people and have built a flexible and inclusive work environment with competitive benefits, training, and professional development opportunities. But the real driving force behind the unique culture of caring, compassion and innovation at the Hospital has come from the dedication and commitment of our staff in making the Hospital a leader in our industry.”

The Hospital is one of 75 organizations across the GTA to be recognized with the award, a competition managed by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers in partnership with TRIEC, a non-profit organization with experience in immigrant employer issues. The award honours employers from a variety of industries who are leaders in their field in attracting and retaining quality employees.

In choosing the Top 75, editors compared employers to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. Winners are selected based upon physical workplace; work atmosphere and social criteria; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

The announcement comes just months after the Hospital was honoured with the Best Employers for New Canadians award in February for its innovative programs that help newcomers make the transition to work life in Canada, reduce employment barriers and assist recent immigrants with education credentials and language and cultural integration.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a large and vibrant Catholic teaching and research hospital in the heart of Toronto. Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital leads with innovation, and serves with compassion. Renowned for providing exceptional patient care, St. Michael’s Hospital is a regional trauma centre and downtown Toronto’s designated trauma centre for adults.
