St. Michael’s Irfan Dhalla one to watch in 2012: Toronto Star

TORONTO, Ont., Jan. 1, 2012-- At only 35, Dr. Irfan Dhalla is a practicing internist at St. Michael's, a professor at the University of Toronto medical school and a scientist at the Keenan Research Centre at St Mike's as well as the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

Some of the work Irfan is leading includes:
  • A study on the "virtual ward," which provides intensive home care from doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists and care coordinators.
  • "knowledge translation" and healthydebate.ca - an online magazine aimed at the public that drills down into important health issues, ensuring health policy decisions are guided by evidenced-based research

In the coming year, Dhalla plans to continue his research and has an interest in the epidemiology of abuse of prescription painkillers and how to reduce the number of deaths they cause.
