Dr. Katalin Szaszi of St. Michael’s Hospital received one of the awards to further her study of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying chronic kidney disease. Dr. Szaszi focuses on how inflammation and other cellular stress associated with common conditions such as such as diabetes and high blood pressure alter the lining cells of kidneys and trigger kidney disease.

The awards are given to scientists in their first five years of independent research.
