The AHRC, a part of the Knowledge Institute, will support clinical research activity at the Hospital by providing an environment where students and investigators receive the mentorship and infrastructure needed to efficiently conduct clinical studies. The AHRC is expected to house a critical mass of applied research methodologists to serve as a resource for clinical researchers at St. Michael's Hospital.

The former director of U.S. Outcomes Research at Pfizer in New York, Mamdani was a scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences from 1998 to 2005, where he developed an international reputation for studies evaluating the real-world impact of pharmaceutical agents.

"The decision to join the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital was not a difficult one," Mamdani said. "The calibre of individuals at the Hospital, its caring environment and 'can-do' attitude make this a unique place that is well positioned to be a leader in clinical research. I am humbled and honoured to be a part of this wonderful team."

Mamdani holds a doctor of pharmacy from the University of Michigan, a master of public health from Harvard University and a master of arts in economics from Wayne State University.
