St. Michael's Hospital has unveiled a new heart health unit to focus on patient-centered care in a facility that will combine leading-edge care in one of Canada's top five cardiac sites.

Opening of the McRae unit

"The Robert McRae Heart Health Unit brings all of our heart related services together in one location from education to specialty treatments, pre-operative and post-operative cardiac rehab and long-term care," director of the unit Dr. Anthony Graham said. "It all happens here in a comfortable environment where patients are the centre of care."

Now, patients who previously had to co-ordinate their own appointments and visit various locations within the Hospital to see heart specialists, will have access to a spacious, warm and inviting centre offering multiple services in one central location.

The centre features automatic blood pressure cuffs, examination rooms with fully accessible computers that can access patient records and a central education area for patients and families.

"Funds raised for the first-class facility came from an outpouring of support from our donors and the late Robert McRae," Hospital foundation president Alayne Metrick said. "Without this generous support, and the hard work of our fundraising volunteers and staff, construction of this Unit would not have been possible."

The official opening of the new centre comes on the heels of a new trauma and neurosurgery ICU that celebrated its official unveiling earlier this month and is slated to open at the end of January.

These much needed investments in the health-care environment translate into an investment in our staff and people, executive vice-president of programs and chief nursing executive Ella Ferris said.

"A positive work environment enhances the satisfaction of the clinical team and that, in turn, leads to patient satisfaction and better clinical outcomes for the patients," she said.
St. Michael's Hospital is a renowned regional referral centre that has more than 25,000 ambulatory patient visits each year, including high-risk cardiac patients and surgical cases deemed untreatable by other cardiac centres.
