Project Progress Update - April 2010
As of October 20, 2009, the building’s curtain wall glass envelope was complete on both the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre. Exterior aluminum cladding on the North wall of the building was completed early in 2010 and the installation of exterior sunshades is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of April.
A look inside the building reveals a site active with extensive technical work – a result of the constant activity and coordination between the approximately 250 workers onsite. As of March 2010, partition work is ongoing on every floor of the Keenan Research Centre, giving shape to laboratories and offices. Partitions are progressing on floors four through seven in the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre. Framing for drywall ceilings began in early October and is progressing though the Keenan Research Centre. Flooring installation is ongoing on floors two through five in the west building. Finishes are also progressing in washrooms on the second and third floors.
Mechanical and electrical work is occurring on multiple floors throughout the building. As a result, the mechanical HVAC system is nearly complete up to the sixth floor in the Keenan Research Centre and is close to completion throughout the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre. The current main area of focus is the Mechanical Penthouse on the ninth floor, as well as the complicated HVAC system on the eighth floor. Permanent power to the building was activated during the first week of March, allowing the building to come off temporary generators and for equipment to be switched on.
Complex plumbing systems, designed to accommodate the wet research labs on floors four through six, are nearly complete and lab bench casework is being installed on floors four and five.
Completion and operation of all elevators within the building is expected to be completed by April 2010, with the service elevator already in operation.
Future milestones will include the installation of the feature staircase as well as the architectural millwork throughout the building.
