Pat and Barbara Keenan Named Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year 2004 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Pat and Barbara Keenan are long-time friends and supporters of St. Michael's Hospital. In November 2005, they made one of their dreams a reality with a lead gift towards the Keenan Research Centre, bringing their cumulative gift to St. Michael's Hospital to more than $25 million.
Pat and Barbara began their relationship with the Hospital even before
Pat was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1985 and served as Chair
from 1990 to 1994. The Keenan family endowed the Hospital's first
chair in medical research (nephrology) in 1992, made substantial donations
to research in kidney disease and also to a new floor dedicated to the
care of patients with kidney disease. In 2001, the Keenans also established
a $5 million endowment for research in inner city health and critical care
in honour of His Eminence Gerald Emmett Cardinal Carter.
