Arranging a Clinical Elective, Fellowship or Placement
Arranging a Medical Residency Elective
A postgraduate medical trainee from one of the other five Ontario medical schools who wishes to take an elective under the supervision of a University of Toronto (U of T) postgraduate program director/training program must submit the following documentation to the host U of T residency program. This will then be forwarded to the U of T Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office for registration purposes:
- Written permission from Toronto program director agreeing to the elective. For the list of program directors, visit www.pgme.utoronto.ca
- Written permission from current program director at the home university
- Date of birth, Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Complete immunization record
- Proof of registration with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
Note: PGME Office will access certification of MD and PG license data through CPSO website.
Note: Residents already registered with the University of Toronto can contact the Student Centre directly
Registration Process:
- Once the PGME Office receives the required documents from the University of Toronto postgraduate program, a Letter of Appointment (LOA) will be issued to the resident.
- This letter must be signed by the resident and returned to the PGME Office.
- A copy will be forwarded to the CPSO.
- Along with the LOA, the resident will receive a PIN/password letter.
- Using the PIN/Password, the resident will be able to register on-line at the PGME website
- Print off his/her Confirmation of Registration form - provided all the information noted above (1-5) has been received.
- The Confirmation of Registration form will allow the resident or clinical fellow to register with the Student Centre directly.

Internationally Trained Physicians Seeking an Observership
While St. Michael's does not offer a formal observership program and we do not facilitate the matching of observers and supervisors, once you have met the criteria below, please have the supervising staff person contact the Medical Staff Liaison Office at 416-864-5205 to assist you in setting up an Observership.
To obtain a placement as an Observer you must:
- Be a licensed Physician in your country of origin
- Have prior agreement of a St. Michael's Staff Physician that would take responsibility for you at all times
- Acknowledge that your observership can only run for a maximum of eight (8) weeks
- Acknowledge that no formal credit can be provided for this observership

Arranging a Nursing Placement
Student placements are available to nursing students from accredited universities or colleges in Ontario and for many other Canadians and internationally accredited institutions. Visit our Nursing Education page for more details.
