How do I arrange a clinical placement or elective at St. Michael's?

Where Do I get a St. Michael's pager?
Pagers for medical residents, clinical fellows and medical students are issued at the Student Centre. There is a $50 deposit required for pager assignment for residents and clinical fellows. This deposit is refunded when the pager is returned. Please call Locating at ext. 5431 and inform them of your pager number. Batteries can be obtained from the Student Centre or the IT department (Room 4-007, Shuter Wing).
Where can I get a dictation number?
Medical Resident, clinical fellows and medical students are asked to contact the transcription centre located at 1-007 Queen Wing between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for dictation number assignment.
How do I get a St. Michael's e-mail address?
While doing a rotation, or clinical placement at St. Michael's, an internal e-mail account is created. Accessing e-mail is easy. Use your last name and the first letter of your first name (all lower case) and the password is smh with the barcode number that is on your badge. If you are unable to access your e-mail, call our Help Desk at ext. 5751. Medical students are not provided with a St-Michael's e-mail address.
Is there somewhere I can park my bicycle?
Located near the Bond St. entrance, all students are given ID card access to the "bike cage".
Is there a library for students? Where can I get a copy card?
The Health Sciences Library provides value-added health information to staff, students and patients to assist in patient care, education and research. Students and trainees must wear their St. Michael's identification badge to access services such as training on the use of our research database (upon request). Books and journals cannot be signed out.
Located on the first floor in Room 1-008 Queen Wing, the Health Sciences Library is open from Monday to Friday 8 a.m - 8 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Copy cards for medical students and residents are available at the front desk inside the library. Phone: 416-864-5059.
Where do I submit changes to Resident Call Schedule?
Please email the Telecommunications Office (locating) with any changes to the call schedule at SMH_Locating@smh.ca. If changes are effective less than 48 hour, email and also call ext. 5431 and you will receive written confirmation.
I have completed my rotation/placement. What should I do now?
Students and trainees should report to the Student Centre <student centre link> to:
- return access cards
- return pagers for deposit refund
- complete clinical placement evaluation
To obtain a refund for hospital scrubs and lab coats, report to the hospital's cash office at 1 Cardinal Carter South Wing.
Where is the Human Resources department located?
Human Resources is located on the 14th floor of 250 Yonge St (West on Shuter, North on Yonge) (Cadillac Fairview Building). The department is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can be reached at 416-867-7401.
The Human Resources Satellite Office is located on the 3rd floor of the Shuter wing and is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
What is an Affiliation Agreement?
An Affiliation Agreement is a formal agreement that is made between St. Michael's and an Academic Institution that allows students from that institution to come to St. Michael's for clinical placements or internships. Affiliation Agreements must be in place for a student placement to occur.
The typical affiliation agreement negotiation process includes the following:
- Academic program review
- Internal stakeholder consultation
- Document preparation
- Contract submission to academic affiliate
- Final review/approval
- Internal stakeholder communication
This process can take 3-6 months from start to finish.
What is required for an affiliation agreement to be put in place?
At a minimum for all agreements we require:
- Completion of the affiliation agreement negotiation
- Evidence that the program's objectives fit with the St. Michael’s mission and vision
- Evidence of appropriate insurance coverage
- The program must be accredited by a recognized accreditor of the discipline.
