Jeffrey C. Lozon

Jeffrey C. Lozon
President & Chief Executive Officer

One of Canada's most influential health-care administrators, Jeffrey C. Lozon (Jeff) has distinguished himself over a 30 year career, transforming the industry and positioning Canadian health care on the international stage.

A past deputy minister of health and long-term care for the Province of Ontario (1999-2000), Jeff is currently president and chief executive officer of St. Michael's Hospital and the newly appointed chair of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. Successfully steering the $485-million institution through 14 years of challenge, change and growing prosperity, Jeff is now charting a new course for the Hospital. Under his leadership, the Hospital is building the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, comprised of the Keenan Research Centre and Li Ka Shing International Centre in Healthcare Education. A North American first, it will speed the transfer of research breakthroughs to the bedside and serve as a model for the international medical community.

Jeff has served on many national boards and advisory panels, notably Canada Health Infoway (vice chair since 2000) and a provincial committee appointed by the premier on the future role of government (2002-2004). Holding an honourary doctor of civil laws from Bishops University, Jeff is associate professor at the University of Toronto and a board member at the University of Guelph.

Alayne MetrickAlayne Metrick
President of St. Michael's Hospital Foundation

Alayne has headed the Foundation since 1995. Previously, she spent nine years as president of the Centenary Hospital Foundation. During her tenure, net revenues have grown from $3.5M to $17.8M. Under Alayne's leadership, the Foundation has had several successes, including a fundraising first in North America in 1998 when 100% of St. Michael's physicians contributed to the campaign. In 2002, Alayne and the Foundation achieved another first as the only organization to obtain 100% participation from the Hospital's doctors for a second time. In 2002, Alayne received her Fellows designation (FAHP) from the Association of Healthcare Professionals. She is one of only fourteen others in Canada who hold this designation. She has also received many awards over the years acknowledging her expertise and dedication, including the prestigious Community of Service Award from St. Michael's Hospital and, in 2005, the Association for Fundraising Professional's Fundraiser of the Year Award. Alayne is now leading her team in a $120 million campaign.

Ella FerrisElla Ferris
Executive Vice President of Programs & Chief Nursing Executive

Ella is a long service employee who has been with St. Michael's Hospital since 1972. Ella has been Program Director for both the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Program and the Heart and Vascular Program. She played a key leadership role during SARS as the Program Director for the SARS Unit. From December 2003 to May 2004, she was Interim Chief Nursing Officer.

In the role of Executive Vice President, Programs and Chief Nursing Executive, Ella oversees the program areas of Trauma/Neurosurgery, Mobility, Heart and Vascular, Quality and Risk Management, Nursing and Health Disciplines Professional Practice, and Clinical Informatics.

Ella brings to her role a mix of practical experience and professional credentials. She is a Registered Nurse with 30 years of diversified experience in medicine, surgery and critical care, and holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business.

Bob HowardDr. Robert Howard
Executive Vice President of Programs and Education & Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Howard has been executive vice president of programs, education and chief medical officer at St. Michael's Hospital since 1998. His vice presidential responsibilities include the diabetes comprehensive care program, the specialized complex care program, inner city health program and perioperative services and Hospital-wide theme development. As chief medical officer he is responsible for credentialing and standards of medical practice for dentists, midwives and physicians in the Hospital.

In his role as vice president education, he is responsible for developing education at all levels in the Hospital and for strengthening the link with the University of Toronto and our other academic partners.

Bob has an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from the University of Toronto and graduated from McMaster University medical school in 1975. In 1982 he joined St. Michael's Hospital as a staff cardiologist with a special interest in echocardiography. Bob was heavily involved in teaching and the division of cardiology's heart failure research program. In 1989 Bob became director of the University of Toronto training program in cardiology. He took on increasing administrative responsibilities and in 1993 became acting chief for the division of cardiology. In 1994 he became medical director of the heart program. Bob is associate professor, faculty of medicine, University of Toronto and continues to practice clinical cardiology one day per week. He graduated in 2003 from the Richard Ivey School of Business executive MBA program.

John KingJohn King
Executive Vice President of Hospital Services & Chief Administrative Officer

John King is a certified health executive with 25 years of experience in the health care field. He has a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa. He was appointed executive vice president and chief administrative officer at St. Michael's Hospital in July 2002. His portfolio includes finance, planning, information systems, human resources, legal services, corporate performance, medical imaging, labs and supply chain and support services functions. Prior to joining St. Michael's Hospital, John was assistant deputy minister of health care programs with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. This division is the largest single division in government with a budget of $14 billion. In this role, John was responsible for a portfolio that included hospitals, long term care facilities, home care, public health, mental health and community services. John is a seasoned senior manager with extensive executive management experience, including senior vice president of the Alberta Healthcare Association and senior operating officer of several Alberta hospitals under the umbrella of the Calgary Regional Health Authority. John continues to support international exchange programs with physicians, administrators and politicians from Canada and Scandinavian countries.

Arthur S. SlutskyDr. Arthur S. Slutsky
Vice President of Research

Dr. Slutsky is a pulmonary critical care physician whose research interests include acute respiratory failure, non-conventional ventilation, classic respiratory mechanics, asthma pathophysiology, lung transplantation, and mechanical ventilation. He received his B.A.Sc. (cum laude) (1970) in engineering science, M.A.Sc. (1972) in industrial engineering at the University of Toronto and MD (1976) from McMaster University. Following a medical residency, Dr. Slutsky completed a pulmonary fellowship at Harvard Medical School and stayed on as an assistant professor of medicine. He returned to the University of Toronto in 1984 and was promoted to professor of medicine, surgery, and biomedical engineering in 1988. From 1989-2000 he was division director, respiratory medicine at the University of Toronto. He is currently vice president of research at St. Michael's Hospital, and director of the interdepartmental division of critical care medicine, University of Toronto. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and editorials. Honours include election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, William Goldie Prize for Research, the Sandoz Senior Investigator Award, election to the Fleischner Society for Thoracic Imaging and Diagnosis, and Recognition for Scientific Accomplishments Award, American Thoracic Society. His work focuses on translational research in the context of the intensive care unit with a focus on mechanical ventilation. He is, or has been, a member of the editorial board of the journals: Critical Care Medicine, Sepsis, and Respiratory Care; and associate editor of the Canadian Respiratory Journal. He has been on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Physiology, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and New Horizons. He is an advisor to the Food and Drug Administration on Biomedical Research, and recently completed two terms as chair of a FDA Advisory Panel (respiratory and anesthesiology devices).
