A Message from Jeff Lozon, Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to our website, showcasing the finest that St. Michael's Hospital has to offer.

At no other time in history have there been more challenges and opportunities in health research, education and patient care as today. At St. Michael's Hospital we are excited to be playing a national and increasingly international role in the search for solutions.

The last 12 months alone have seen St. Michael's Hospital achieve a number of proud milestones. Patient care programs have earned national acknowledgment, including the Canadian Nurses Association Employer Recognition Award (2005), and the Hospital continues to work with policy makers, planners and practitioners to mold and improve the future of the health care system. For example, the Hospital was recently awarded funding from the province to pilot new models for reducing emergency department wait times. Furthermore, our internationally influential researchers have invented and implemented a revolutionary antibody-coated stent that reduces complications in angioplasty patients, received approval of the world's first gene therapy trial for pulmonary hypertension and identified key factors causing fatal reactions to peanut allergies, to name only a few.

From modest beginnings 115-years ago, offering care for the sick and the poor of Toronto's inner city, St. Michael's Hospital has grown into a national resource, making significant advancements in research, education and patient care, while spreading our wings worldwide to bring health care to new heights.

Today, the Hospital is embarking on a bold new vision to save more lives globally every day. In doing so, plans are underway to construct the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, comprised of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Centre in Healthcare Education. First of its kind, the Knowledge Institute will enable the marrying of research, education and clinical care on one Hospital campus to foster the creation and sharing of best practices and to ensure that these new practices benefit everyone's health sooner.

The Hospital's vision to lead and passion to care demonstrate the values-driven approach to health care that forms the fabric of St. Michael's Hospital. Our vision and unwavering commitment to compassion also attract extraordinary individuals who are brave and forward thinkers, and who constantly push the envelope to shape health care advancements and who are setting the pace for a new international standard of excellence.
